Amel Janae’s paintings on mirror depict the nude human body in, as she has said, its ‘infinite possibilities.’ Her primary interest lies in imitating skin with paint. Delicately mixing and blending her material, she achieves a realism that presents skin as seductive in its multiplicity of tone and texture. These bodies connect through sensual touch, entwined and resting upon each other.

Her compositions leave negative space to reveal the mirror upon which the images are painted; when standing in front of each piece, viewers observe their own bodies reflected back, as they become part of the work themselves. In her practice, she prompts consideration of how one’s personal physicality exists in relation to another’s.
